Cheshire East's council leader Michael Jones has withdrawn his name from the nominations of 'Council Leader of the Year' award.

He had been shortlisted for the LGIU C'llr Achievement Awards but, as regular readers of AudlemOnline and other media will be aware, this sparked off a storm of protest.

Independent councillors' leader, Brendan Murphy – who published an article on this website last month – wrote to the award organisers to complain, saying the nomination comes too close to the May elections.

Cllr Jones said: "I'm proud to lead this council. I'm proud to be nominated by the LGIU but I have written to them saying I will withdraw my name.

"Whoever nominated me, I say thank you but I withdraw my name from the nomination because it should not be about me, it should not be about personalities, it should be about the job."
