A team from Cheshire Probation Community Payback were hard at work yesterday painting the walls at the new footpath steps on the Shroppie Fly car park.

Over recent months, funded by Audlem Parish Council, the path that was a rough track down to the steps has been improved by reducing the gradient and building a number of steps as it passes through the trees.

As well as the team, paint and brushes were all provided free of charge.

The walls and steps where the path runs down to the pub car park needed a major tidy up and Cheshire East and Cheshire Probation were happy to help.

A team of five plus a supervisor arrived in teeming rain yesterday morning. Fortunately, the rain soon stopped and painting was possible. The two coats of Forest Green masonry paint replaced the previous cream paint and it's expected that the improved route from the playing field and public car park to Audlem Wharf will prove increasingly popular.

It's likely to be very busy at the Audlem Transport Festival on 31st July. As well as the three hundred or so vehicles parked up on the playing field, twenty one historic boats have now booked in and will be moored on the Wharf and below the Shroppie Fly.

The first of those boats, the famous Saturn, has already arrived.

Today, the judges for the Cheshire Community Spirit award will visit the steps before crossing the playing field to view the major refurbishment of the public toilets that's underway as part of their tour of the village.
