Combermere Abbey Estate is to host an Open Garden Afternoon on Thursday August 21st, to remember WW1 and benefit the Burleydam Village Hall Trust.
A donation from the day's proceeds will support the reinstatement of the script on the village war memorial at the Church in Burleydam.
Sarah Callander Beckett, owner of Combermere Abbey comments: 'We are very pleased to support this small but vital local charity connected to Dodcutt-cum-Wilkesley. Combermere Abbey has had a strong connection with Burleydam for many centuries and it is very fitting to support this memorial paying tribute to those who died in the Great War'.
Visitors will enjoy the rare opportunity to explore approximately 10 acres of the gardens with the beautiful Victorian Walled Gardens of the C12th Combermere Abbey, and access to The Pleasure Garden and The Garden Wood, leading down to the lake with its enchanting views.
The Abbey's team of gardeners will be on hand to answer any garden queries and share their tips and anecdotes at this delightful and informal event. A history and map of the gardens including plants list will be available.
The magnificently restored Glasshouse designed by Messenger sits within the Abbey's fruit tree maze. Unique in the world, it is an espaliered labyrinth of redcurrants, gooseberries and over 25 varieties of apple and pear trees, and will provide a wonderful place to enjoy the light refreshments on offer, whilst taking in the sights and sounds of the gardens.
There will be a Plant & Produce Stall too, with lovely home-grown plants, home-made fresh fruit juices and preserves, as well as books about the Estate. Refreshments and homemade cakes will be available.
Gates will open at 1.00pm and the event will close at 5.00pm. Dogs and picnics are not permitted in the Gardens.
Admission cost £5. Parking is free of charge.
Combermere Abbey is privately owned and still a family home. However, it is well known for its excellent award winning holiday cottages and as a wedding and events venue. It is located between Audlem and Whitchurch, in Shropshire on the A530 near the junction with the A525.
