Council recognises and celebrates foster carers' long service

Foster carers have been recognised for their dedication and commitment to caring for children at a ceremony held by Cheshire East Council.
Gordon and Jill Harle, from Alsager, who have fostered for 20 years, were recognised at a ceremony in Congleton. Other awards were presented to foster carers from across Cheshire East, recognising all they do to nurture and care for some of the borough's most vulnerable children and young people.
Gordon said: "The best thing about being a foster carer is knowing that the children are safe in your home and watching them grow and enjoy life. We have fostered seven children and young people full time over the last 20 years, and provided respite care for many more. We are currently looking after two young people who have been with us for 11 years.

"We chose a career as foster carers as our own children were growing up and becoming more independent and we felt we had the time and space to help others. Plus it was always something we wanted to do.

"Being a foster carer is so very rewarding; we've had lots of fun and laughter and enjoyed watching the children grow into adults. In terms of skills, you need to be prepared to think outside the box and be a strong advocate for the child or young person. There are so many good children who need a helping hand to get on the right track of life and we thank Cheshire East Council for this long service award."

Councillor Kathryn Flavell, Cheshire East Council's cabinet member for children and families, said: "This was a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the long service and dedication of our foster carers. I was proud to present awards to those who have shown outstanding commitment, providing loving, safe and stable homes to children and young people. I thank them from the bottom of my heart for everything they have done.

"Nationally and in Cheshire East, there are an increasing children and young people who still need a loving foster home. This could be anything from one day a week or a week's short break respite, to every day for the remainder of their childhood and beyond.

"Our foster carers look after the most vulnerable children, often at short notice and at times of crisis. Foster carers are a highly-dedicated group of people, many who have worked for Cheshire East Council for years and who have dedicated their lives to caring for and nurturing children in need."
