We are sorry to be looking this far ahead in the middle of summer but we have been alerted to the canal winter stoppages in early 2017.

The canal will be closed from 2nd January 2017 to 17th March 2017 at Bridge 89A – this is to enable Network Rail to do works on the railway bridge which crosses the canal before it reaches Nantwich.

There is also a stoppage on the Audlem Locks at Lock 13 from 4th Jan 2017 to 14th February 2017 and at Adderley locks from 4th Jan to 24th Jan – so in summary we 'll see no boat traffic through the village from either direction from 4th January to 14th Februray and there will be no route towards Nanwich from 2nd January to 17th March.

Clearly this will have quite an impact on the village. If anyone is concerned by the impact of these closures you can call 03030 40 40 40 and ask to be put through to the North Wales and Borders Team or by emailing: northwalesborders@canalrivertrust.org.uk

As you can see, we were unable to resist using our favourite winter canal photo, by Geoff Smethurst, showing Audlem as the only spot on the globe where penguins and polar bears co-exist.
