Can you remember July 1966?

This photograph appeared in August Waterways World magazine, in the story of a canal trip made by Max & Edna Holgate in July 1966. They were in a very basic hire-boat with a petrol engine, and needed to replenish their fuel supplies in Audlem, which was when the picture was taken.

The church clock shows it was 3:30pm, and a careful look at the pump shows it was 4/11 a gallon. Neither currency nor measure have survived the 50 years, and that price equates to 5p/litre!

The Lord C car park contains a Mini (the proper sort) and what looks like a Ford Prefect, and there is a Ford Anglia van in the road.

Two questions for folks who can remember those days:

  • 1. Who is filling the petrol cans?
  • 2. What are the ales advertised on the LordC walls? The big sign is obscured by the petrol pumps. There is a small sign on the end wall of the pub, but it's too indistinct to read. Those were the days! Dave Martin
