Steve Buscemi, born December 13th 1957, is an American actor and film director.
Buscemi has starred and supported in successful Hollywood and indie films, including Parting Glances, New York Stories, Reservoir Dogs, Desperado, Con Air, Armageddon and Big Fish. He is also known for his appearances in many films by the Coen brothers: Miller's Crossing, Barton Fink, The Hudsucker Proxy, Fargo, and The Big Lebowski.
His film debut was the 1985 No Wave Cinema film The Way it Is, directed by Eric Mitchell. Other early films include Parting Glances in 1986 and Slaves of New York in 1988.
In 1990, Buscemi had a number crime based roles including the henchman of Laurence Fishburne in Abel Ferrara's King of New York.
From 2010 to 2014, he portrayed Enoch "Nucky" Thompson in the critically acclaimed series Boardwalk Empire, which earned him two Screen Actors Guild Awards, a Golden Globe, and two nominations for an Emmy Award. He made his directorial debut in 1996, with Trees Lounge, in which he also starred. Other works include Animal Factory (2000), Lonesome Jim (2005) and Interview (2007). He has also directed numerous episodes of TV shows, including Homicide: Life on the Street, The Sopranos, Oz, 30 Rock, and Nurse Jackie. He currently hosts the Emmy Award-winning AOL On comedy talk-show Park Bench.
Before pursuing a career in acting, between 1980 and 1984, Buscemi was a New York City firefighter with Engine Company No. 55 in the Little Italy section of New York. On the day after the 9th September attacks on the World Trade Centre he arrived at his former fire station to volunteer. He worked twelve-hour shifts for a week, digging through rubble looking for missing firefighters.
