Bill Cowen sent in this message to say that birds had been eating rotten apples in his garden and Derek McKelvey had spotted a crane at Cox Bank on a field West of the canal

Your correspondent observed a fieldfare on 1st February.

On 10th January we were invaded by more than 20 birds who in 3 days cleared a considerable quantity of rotting apples.

They were mostly blackbirds some pigeons and 2 fieldfare. The fieldfare were quite aggressive chasing the others away

Very recent message from Derek:
Fieldfares are feeding on the neighbouring field as I type and I will throw out a few rotten apples to supplement their diet
