Beech Guard needed in village centre

No, not a spelling error and, in any case, Audlem is fifty miles from the sea! It's the Copper Beech next to the Muller development that is causing real concern, as was highlighted by yesterday's letter from ADAS to Crewe & Nantwich Borough Council saying that 'crown reduction' of the tree must not be allowed.

There is clearly cause for concern. A resident has already seen someone from the Muller site showing a tree surgeon the shape he wanted the tree. His hand gestures indicated a severe reduction in size. Another resident found a man up the tree and asked what was going on. The reply was "I've been asked to cut off a branch but I don't think it needs any work doing".

One Audlem resident has written to www.audlem.org saying she had heard that beeches were particularly affected by changes in the moisture in the surrounding soil. Therefore nearby building work could cause damage. Given that this is probably the most prominent tree in Audlem, it would appear a guard is needed or the village could become the scene of the Audlem Chainsaw Massacre. Please contact ADAS, the Parish Council or the webteam if you see anything suspicious or have any thoughts on this issue.
