Audlem self-build in TV series

We are delighted to say that Steve & Chris Elliott's project is to be featured in a national TV series and that the film crew made one of their site visits yesterday – when, for once, the sun also came out!

Audlem Online was there to catch the film crew in action. We should stress, for H&S reasons, that the hard hats and hi-vis jackets came off only briefly for the sake of avoiding reflections from the bright sunshine in the photo.

The house that Steve & Chris are building takes many concepts from the German design standard known as ‘Passiv Haus’ or ‘Passive House’ as well as the UK's Code for Sustainable Homes (CfSH).

Such a house should require little energy to heat it, other than that produced by sunlight, a ground source heat pump, and that generated by the occupants and their cooking/lighting etc, as well as using the internal warm air to heat the fresh air that is fed in.

There is also an emphasis on minimising the carbon footprint of the house through careful sourcing of materials and also using local contractors.

Channel Four’s new series is following twenty families as they embark on a self-build project in a bid to create their ideal home for less than the price of buying.

Each year around 15,000 people attempt to build something unique to perfectly fit their lifestyle. If they stay on budget, their self-built home, it is said, could save them around 30% compared to buying an off-the-peg house.

Channel 4 are focussing on real people striving to attain amazing yet affordable homes with strict budgets. Each stand-alone episode will follow the fortunes of a self-builder attempting to build a new home.

The self-builders – from across the UK – are all aiming to construct their ideal home in around 12-14 months for less than it would cost to buy a property on the market.

Presenter Charlie Luxton will be keeping an eye on progress with several visits to site culminating in a final reveal of the finished home.
