The Nantwich Chronicle's front page this week covers the story of a gunman in Audlem shooting from a Toyota Landcruiser and firing an air gun indiscriminately.

The incident first came to light on the Audlem Online Chatbox and was featured on this website in the News when a description of the incident was sent in by 'Chunky' – see story on 27th April – Putting 'shooting' record straight.

The incident took place at 6pm on 8th April and the Cheshire Police helicopter was scrambled. Chatbox contributors were quick to draw potential similarities with the Cumbrian incident of last year.

It has since emerged that a 33-year old man from Audlem has been reported to the firearms licensing department for checks to see if he has other weapons. He had, according to the newspaper report, been shooting at rabbits but from his vehicle on the road.

Head of Nantwich Neighbourhood Policing Unit, Inspector Dave Smithers said: "I wish to reassure residents that Audlem and its surrounding areas are a safe place to live. Firearms of all types need to be used responsibly, whether for work or leisure purposes.

"However, the recent incident in Audlem underlines that we all need to remain vigilant and any inappropriate use of firearms, including air weapons, should be reported to the police."

The Chronicle is on sale now at Williams' newsagents at 77p.
