Audlem F C match report .

Date 02.02.20 -- a palindromic date !

As I prep myself for yet another foray into the realms of the Sunday League Football of cheshire, my mind is awakened by a piece in the newspaper about the deforestation taking place in the Amazon basin . Horrendous news of so many noble trees being sent crashing to the ground . And why ? To make clearances for cropping and food harvesting.

We, the western world, do complain and complain hard at this massive destruction. But. Some three hundred years ago this country and most of Europe as a whole was covered in forests of many noble trees. Oaks. limes, yews, ash, willows ,beeches etc . And what did our forefathers do? Cut it down so as to have grazing for cattle, for cropping. And as demand for ships, foods, housing etc increased massively .
And we, an empire holding sway over about 25% of the land mass of this earth , took ourselves to cut down all the Teak of Thailand, the mahogany's . The balsa trees , ebony's etc .
To create rubber plantations in Malaysia , from trees smuggled from Manaus up river of the great Amazon . Hypocrites ?? And now I read of Mexican gangs cutting down the firs and pines in Mexico so that they can grown avocados and limes to sell to the USA . The very trees that millions of Monarch butterflies journey to from Canada each year to mate ! All to make more dollars.

And I was reminded of a book I read with such fervour in my early teens .the journey of Colonel Fawcett , up the Amazon and all the reading of the anacondas, the piranhas -- which can strip a cow to the bone in minutes if it falls into the river. It fired me so much that I was determined to travel there myself. But. Then my call up papers for National Service arrived. That was the end of my dreams -- as a bubble bursts in the sky. Colonel Fawcett died in the jungles and forests.

I digress.

Our match.

We are at home and will so be for the three games as delayed matches are caught up .
We face Talbot FC again having been beaten by them last Sunday 4-1 . A return revenge match .
Pitch has been rolled and slitted . Well marked out lines. Sadly some clever fellow has driven on the playing field leaving track marks. Perimeter fencing repaired . Broken glass in the tennis court goal mouth . Why oh why do they do such idiotic things. A child could fall. A dog cut cut it paw pads .
Poo turn out again for Manager Kev Mort .Missing many players . So just one sub -- Kev himself . But I have the chance to sign up Connor Mahoney who arrives with Danny. Good camaraderie in the team as in truth overall we are playing well .
Line up is
Goal . -- Connor Baxter
Defence -- Ross Henderson . Dan Rooney. Kyle Doughty . Simon Cavell
Midfield -Paul Ashley Danny Mahoney . Andrew Betteley . Connor Mahoney
Attack. -- Ben Walker . Mark Parker .

Subs. Kev Mort and Will Cork if he gets here in time .
Referee David Bloor .
1100
Off we go . Fairly calm day. The bells of St James filling the air with such jollity of peals. Really do love them and the skills of our bell ringers. Tennis players on court. What a vibrant village this surely is .
1102
0- 1 . Wham . First move of the game.
All the early play is in our half
1104
0-2. Wham wham . Taken apart like tearing paper .
What a start . We are in shock as wave after wave of Talbot players dominate the play.
Referee Bloor very fond of his whistle and his lecturing
1110
Andrew Betteley is floored. Free kick . First of the game .
Play gets a bit messy as much huff and puff but we are not hitting well. Not much chat by the players .
Referees whistle a constant niggle . My gosh he does like his lectures .
We press forward. Free kick taken by Danny is deflecting fir a corner. No gain .
1125
Play still heavily in our half as we defend attack after attack. Cry for penalty by Talbot but referee waves it away.
( large flock of seagulls pass over head. Still amazes me to see them so much in land , but then I recall ploughed fields and open rubbish tips!! )
1131
Corner for Talbot. No gain.
Still dominating play but we are defending well .
1135
Strong attack on our goal but Connor saves with his feet. Phew.
Referee still blueing his whistle and lecturing opponents . Very irritating .
1140.
Another corner for us but no gain.
Connor saving us from slaughter .

HALF TIME .

Off I troop to the Farm Made cafe for hot chocolate .
No score whilst I was away.
Will Cork comes on .Mark Parker off with back strain .
Again ref with his whistle and his lectures. Actually books a Talbot player .
Simon Cavell off and in comes Kev Mort .
Our range of ages now is 17 to 46 !!
Then
1215
0-3
1217
0-4
1220
0-5
Hey Ho .
1226
0-6!!
Sliced apart . But for Connor and his bravery, we would have been down in double figures .
Relief.
Full time.
Not a good day, and pitch has really cut up . And we have two consecutive home games now ahead of us, so little chance for it to recover .

Off we go to the very welcome sandwiches and chips at the Bridge Inn
A cock up means we do not get them -- no fault of the pub .
Opponents cannot be with us as they go to their sponsors , the Talbot in Nantwich .
Next game on the 9th versus Sydney Arms .at home .
Man of the Match awarded to Connor for his bravery in the second half .
