On Saturday Audlem 2nd XI slipped to their first defeat of the season when they lost by 2 wickets to Styal 2nd XI.

Batting first, Audlem scored 190-8 off their allotted 45 overs with major contributions coming from John Wainwright (32), Zar Ahmed (22), Paul Thorburn (21), Sam Colclough (21 not out) and an excellent 52 from Ronnie Farnell.

Opener Dan Johnson with a well-constructed 72 and D.Clair (29 not out) were the foundation of Styal's run-chase and the target was reached with 5 overs to spare and the loss of 8 wickets. Ron Farnell took 4-48, Dan Thorburn 2-56 and Lyndon Woodcock 2-46.

The close-fought match was an excellent example of that unique institution known as village cricket where both sides battle tooth and nail for the upper hand in a hugely enjoyable struggle where the result is ultimately only of real importance to the participants and within the boundaries of the villages involved.

Unfortunately Wimbledon, the Ashes, Ramadan, country-lane altercations and a variety of other obligations have meant a truncated report this week. Hopefully normal service will be resumed next week when the seconds visit Rostherne 1st XI.
