The August meeting of Aston and Sound WI took place on Friday 4th August at St Andrews chapel Aston.

Our meeting was opened by Glenys Inight our president who shared the successes that the group had achieved at the recent Nantwich show -

1st in the coronation display board

2nd in the afternoon tea category and 2nd in the red, gold and purple category.

We also came away with the best board in show rosette and best in show for the crown cake made by the very talented Jenny Bourne .

Our speaker for the evening was Alison Long, who gave us an entertaining talk about how she ended up going to boarding school and how her life has been shaped by the experiences she had there. Having to wear "mid grey bulletproof flannelette knickers", whilst very uncomfortable and inelegant, proved to be very useful when needing to smuggle out food that was not palatable at mealtimes!

The strict dress code, dress and capes on Sunday, trousers on Saturday (although definitely no jeans) sounded as strict as the fortnightly menu where sausage chips and thoroughly well boiled cabbage were served up every other Fridaythis actually being a meal the boarders looked forward too once they had worked out how to keep the chips from going soggy .

Whilst it was a funny story, I think we all reflected on our own childhoods and realise how important your school years are in shaping the adult you become.

The competition "Something Purple" was won by Kay Epton, who brought a little book called "When I am old I shall wear purple".

Future dates:

Luncheon club will meet at the Bhurtphore at 12 noon on Friday 11th August

Walking group will meet at 10:30 in the car park of the Dusty Miller Wrenbury on Wednesday 10th August

Our next meeting is a produce show starting at 2 pm on September the 1st in Aston.

All welcome
