Aston & District W.I. March 2024 Report

Our President Glenys Inight welcomed all members to our March meeting, We had a minute’s silence for Beryl Clarke who recently passed away,

On Tuesday 5th March the Luncheon Club will meet at the Combermere Arms in Burleydam at 12,30.

Our Walking Group will meet at Little Budworth on Wednesday 6th March at 10.30 am.

Finally, our Darts Team are through to the Final in Northwich

And finally, we hope to organise a trip to Oswestry Museum in the near future.

The speaker at our March meeting was Victoria Graham who was a Lieutenant Commander in the Queen Alexandra’s Royal Navy Service, who gave an excellent talk entitled 'The Biscuit Club'. As her talk evolved, we soon realised that there was much more to it than just eating biscuits.

Her illustrated talk was about the time she spent at Camp Bastion in Afghanistan as a Royal Navy nurse. The Biscuit Club developed during the quiet hour in the middle of the day when all the casualties from the morning had been dealt with and the operating areas had been thoroughlycleaned and made ready for the next casualtieswhen the troops made theirway back to camp. Then they were back to saving lives till late in the night.

The club began with just a few nurses getting together over a cup of tea and biscuits as a light relief. They soon became quite knowledgeableabout biscuits and started to score them. After a while Victoria wrote to Marks and Spencer’s to tell them of their findings and that M&S biscuits were rated very highly by them. As a result, M& S sent over a very large selection of biscuits for their club. In time the club extended so that the Biscuit tin was made available to anyone who felt the need for some home comforts amidst the very stressful times they had to endure.

At the end of her talk Victoria gave us several packets of these favourite biscuits to enjoy.

The vote of thanks was given by Judy Townsend.

Our competition for a Biscuit Tin was won by Rosalyn Mason.

After that very interesting talk, our members enjoyed tea and cake and the raffle was drawn for five lucky winners!

Our next meeting will be on Friday Evening 5th April at 7.15pm at Sound Chapel when the speaker will be Christine Stockton talking about ‘The Story of Flamenco Dancing’, the competition being a ‘Spanish Souvenir’.

Visitors and new members are always very welcome. For further information please take a look at our web site: – www.astonanddistrictwi.org.uk
