ARS, the Audlem Ramblers Society, have a special treat for Saturday – up to three walks on offer.
Will Williams is leading a 5-booter (see top photo) with option for a 4 booter if the weather is bad or a suitably led splinter group is formed whist Andy Davidson is leading an alternative three booter.
The intention is that all walkers travel together and people can decide at the start which walk they are doing.
A route: 12 miles / 9km, Ascent – 3200 feet / 970 metres. ARS Grade – 5 Boots. Approximately 8 hours (7 hourrs on recce)
B route: ~13.5km, Ascent ~ 600m , ARS Grade 4 Boots, Approximately 6 hours.
Will says: The A route doubles back on itself from Glyder Fach, returning to the point where the other route descends, around 770m. The A route can be easily extended in a number of ways.
The B route avoids the 200m+ climb to Glyder Fach, which is steep and involves rocky terrain that is difficult underfoot, especially if wet or gusty conditions. The B route returns by the same path as the A route.
There is a small steep section descending into Cwm Tryfan but then it's easy walking on a good path all the way back to the car park.
The way up from Capel Curig is a less commonly walked route. On the recce last weekend we didn't meet anyone until we got to the Glyder flank. From thereon there were lots of folk out, which is to be expected for this area at this time of year.
The paths are fairly clear throughout. The first third of the route is frequently boggy, so gaiters are recommended.
Sheep are out with lambs but they were infrequent on the higher slopes on the recce. There are likely to be ground nesting birds, especially on the lower slopes. Not many stiles, but several are the ladder type without purpose built dog holes.
The walk out from the foot of Tryfan back to Capel Curig, is basically flat, 6.4km (4 miles) along a historic route. This is a nice relaxing final section in contrast to the quad burning descent from Glyder Fach, and it allows you to really take in the views without worrying too much about footing.
Andy Davidson says: "This walk (see second photo) is for those who don't wish to do Will's 5 Booter which will I am sure be an outstanding walk.
"I am planning to do a 10 mile approx walk at a reasonably low level from Capel Curig around the above 2 lakes. From descriptions I have, it seems a reasonable 3 booter with approx 300/500 metres of climbing (highest point about 300 metres) over generally good ground.
If the weather is clear it sounds like the views are excellent. I think there are options to shorten it if the weather comes in. I think John Vickers might have led a similar walk a few years ago."
The walk is being recced this week.
