ARS to Peak District

Next Saturday's Long ARS walk is a circular trip along some Peak District gritstone edges with (hopefully) classic views of the Derwent valley.

We park at Grindleford station (where there is a cafe with toilets) and climb up onto White Edge Moor, and then onto White Edge. After passing Wellington's Monument we should get good views of the Chatsworth Estate, before returning along Baslow Edge, Curbar Edge and Froggat Edge.

Total length is about 9/10 miles with just over 1000 feet of climbing, almost all of which is unfortunately at the beginning.

I would rate the route as a 2 booter on our scale of difficulty. For those who do not like exposed places, you do not have to walk right on the edges – but it's more fun if you do!

Whilst dogs are, as usual, welcome we are walking through territory with a lot of ground nesting birds – on the recce we saw and heard lapwing, curlew, pippits, skylarks and grouse – accordingly I would ask that dogs be kept on leads and, indeed, there were plenty of notices to this effect.

It's an 8.30am start from Audlem car park and about a 90 minute drive to Grindleford.
