With the Golf masters having recently passed, Wimbledon on the horizon and warmer weather forecasted thoughts turn to games of tennis and rounds of golf.
'Tennis elbow' (referred to medically as lateral epicondylitis)is a painful condition that affects the outside of the elbow at its bony prominence. Pain can develop in the forearm muscles and tendons which have become damaged and cause weakness when gripping. 'Golfers elbow' is a condition that affects the medial (inside) part of the elbow.
It is a misconception that these conditions only affect golf and tennis players as the damage usually occurs through excessive and repetitive movements of the hands and fingers and can as easily affect people with certain occupations (decorating, joinery, construction, lifting) as they do frequent sports players.
Physiotherapy is an available treatment and a physiotherapist can offer guidance to return you to pain free functional activities and help prevent recurrence.
