Police have issued an alert in Nantwich after arsonists set fire to three cars .

Fire crews were alerted to two separate incidents in Beam Street and Birchin Lane area yesterday.

The first incident was on Beam Street at around 1pm when two saloon cars, a Vauxhall Astra and a Peugeot 206, were well alight when crews arrived on the scene.

Cheshire Fire and Rescue officers said both fires appeared to have been started deliberately.

Another blaze was reported on Birchin Lane, near the town centre, about 15 minutes later. They found a fire had been set under the car but was out when they arrived.

Sergeant Richard Tompkins, of Nantwich Neighbourhood Policing Unit, said: "The three fires happened within a short space of time indicating they are likely to be connected.

"Enquiries are continuing to trace the person, or persons involved and we would urge anyone with information to contact police on 101 if they have any information.

The Nantwich fires come in the wake of a series of arson attacks on cars in Crewe where police report 21 incidents of car fires since May all of which appear to have been started deliberately.

In some cases torched cars have been totally destroyed, with some of them parked on the driveways at family homes.

Earlier this month, Crewe firefighters were called out to three car fires in the space of just five days, all believed to be arson attacks.
