ADAPT Saturday Market. Saturday 18th October – Lord Combermere Carpark.

After all the fun and games of the Community Apple Pressing in the village last Saturday, exhausted and in need of sustenance I stopped off at the White Lion beer festival, to enter their Sausage eating competition, --- to eat 3x 12 German Sausages in 3x long white bread rolls had to be eaten with a pint of water in the fastest time possible. I managed it and was in second place on the leader board when I left. (feeling rather full)

It's still harvest time and time to store away those apples that keep the longest. I have 3 varieties of eating apples that gives us an apple a day all the way through to next April. Winter Gem, Red Falstaff and the best – Egremont Russet. All taste different and are my best keepers . My method, lightly twist the apple on the tree, if it falls away in your hand ---- its ripe. Only pick the unblemished ones. Prepare a plastic bag, by pricking a few holes in it. The old supermarket carrier bags are the best. Carefully place them in the bag, being careful not to bruise them or leave any moisture on them. Tie the bag loosely and put in a fridge at 4 degrees C. We have an old upright one in the garage. Or store them in a cool place like a garage shelf.

Check them when opening the bag to access the apples and remove any rotting ones, once a fortnight, so as not to contaminate the others in the bag. The bag helps to stop them drying out whilst allowing a little air circulation. We used to wrap them up in old newspaper and store them in a seed tray in the garage but the apples quickly dried out in storage or the mice got them. With the mild weather we still have runner beans and tomatoes for sale. Its time to dig up the Jerusalem Artichokes and there will be some on the market with lots of recipes. They contain inulin, a type of soluble fibre that serves as a prebiotic and plays a crucial role in gut health. Also we have eggs, jams and chutneys, of all descriptions, honey, candles, bedding plants, cakes and might be a marrow or two and some fresh apple juice.

Don t forget our RECYCLING POINT on the market stall. jam jars, honey jars, egg boxes, supermarket carrier bags, strawberry cartons and for Audlem Guides we collect biscuit, cake and cracker wrappers; cheese pouches; plastic bread bags and plastic bakery packaging; Ferrero Roche packaging; rubber gloves & packaging. This waste generates FREE cash donations into Audlem Guides' bank account, so every wrapper counts!Chris KnibbsADAPT Secretary.10am till noon on the Lord C carpark Audlem.
