Environmental group ADAPT, (Audlem and District Acting Positively for Transition), held their April meeting on Wednesday. Several visitors joined the group to hear local craftswoman, Val Mackin, give the talk, From Sheep to Wool and Beyond.

Val's presentation was very enjoyable and covered the history of spinning and weaving. There was a demonstration of dyeing using store cupboard items and the chance to take a look at some of the beautiful woollen items Val has produced.

Raw materials such as camel hair, dog hair, sheep's wool and Val's own hair had been spun and dyed and then knitted, crocheted or felted into a whole range of useful and beautiful pieces.

Unfortunately fleeces are often discarded these days but Val is hopeful that new uses can be found for this wonderful renewable material. For example, as sheep wool is an excellent insulator, it can be used in construction as an alternative to non-renewable products.

ADAPT monthly meetings with speakers are held on the first Wednesday of the month at the Baptist Church in Audlem at 7.30 pm. If you would like to go on our mailing list or would like to know more about ADAPT, contact Susan on 811092 or at runaways@hotmail.co.uk">runaways@hotmail.co.uk.
