Several new faces were amongst those present on Thursday, 21st February at the Audlem District History Society monthly meeting when everyone present was enthralled to hear a tape of Jack Nield speaking.

The evening commenced with a poignant introduction by Sarah Hill (a society member) who was a long-time neighbour of Jack's. She recalled visiting his greenhouse where he was particularly proud of his peach and nectarine trees and his vine of Muscat grapes.

Sarah concluded by saying how honoured both she and her husband Edwin were to be invited to Jack's 99th and 100 birthday parties.

Jack Nield lived in The Ash,Woodhouse Lane for virtually all his life and died in 2006 at the age of 100.

Among his memories he recounts paying 1d/2d for the right to sell damsons/eggs on the streets of Market Drayton. To earn pocket money he used to take the train from Norton in Hales to Stoke with rabbits that he had snared. For these he charged 1 shilling and 2s. 6d in wartime!

Jack prided himself on his ability to tame the most difficult of horses. He recalls how the yew trees planted near his farm poisoned his livestock.

An opportunity for all those present to delve into some of the archives of the Society gave rise to much curiosity and discussion and ended a most interesting and enjoyable meeting.
