Vote Poll could be a worry for borough council

This week's Chronicle reports that the Government appears to prefer Cheshire County Council's bid for a single unitary council in the forthcoming reform of local government. This would create a 'Cheshire Council' covering most of the county, including Audlem and Nantwich, with six towns, such as Crewe, having town councils. It would spell the end of borough councils such as Crewe & Nantwich.

An alternative proposal to split Cheshire into two unitary authorities has been given a weaker assessment by Whitehall where the competing proposals were assessed against five criteria such as service availability, affordability, neighbourhood engagement and strategic leadership.

Naturally. Leaders of Crewe & Nantwich Borough Council are unhappy with the Government's proposals to abolish the council without giving the public a say. Audlem Online has, however, been testing the public's view with its Vote Poll over the past month. The results so far are not encouraging for the borough council. With over 200 votes cast, 59% agree to the proposal: "Should Crewe & Nantwich Borough Council be abolished, as proposed by Cheshire County Council? ". 38% have voted against so far and 3% are unsure.

Given the debate that is going on about the re-organisation of local government, we will keep the vote going for another week. If you haven't done so before, do cast your vote by clicking on Yes/No or Unsure and then 'Vote Now' in the Vote poll box. It may not be like a proper election, but we think the Audlem Online Vote Poll is the only local test of public opinion running at present. So it could be interesting for the politicians to see the outcome of this local vote.
