Village a hive of activity preparing for Easter

Anyone walking through Audlem this past week would have been amazed at the work going on as the village was spruced up for Easter and the new summer season. Audlem Wharf was a hive of activity as, first, the scaffolding came down around Audlem Mill, fresh gravel was being spread outside the newly re-opening Canal shop. Inside, it was all hands to the pump as the ground-floor shop and upstairs gallery were being stocked by a large team led by Peter and Christine Silvester, the new proprietors.

Nearby, Moseley's Yard was progressing at speed with several of the canalside properties' roofs being tiled and the rest of the eighteen-property site, plus shops, taking shape.

Further down the canal, work was being completed on the canal embankment between locks 13 and 14 with the towpath now also refurbished and new turf laid as part of a massive £500,000 project to re-enforce the embankment by British Waterways.

In the centre of the village, at the Lord Combermere, it was also all go as new decking was being laid to create a very pleasant out-door area in the garden.

Meanwhile, another team from the Council was repairing the public toilets off the car park and, less surprisingly, the lawns around St James' were being cut ready for the Easter Services.

It may be a over a year since Audlem won its 'Vibrancy' award but, on the evidence of this week, the vibrancy remains.
