Controversy followed the proposal by the Gladman company to get planning permission for up to 120 houses on farmland near Little Heath. There were public meetings and a large majority of Audlem residents were against the scheme.
It was initially rejected by Cheshire East, but following an appeal by Gladman, a public enquiry was held and despite valiant efforts by the Parish Council and Cheshire East, this decision was overturned largely on the grounds that Cheshire East had not produced a satisfactory plan for the provision of sufficient houses over the next few years.
