Ringing a peal on Thursday

Fifty years ago, on 3rd September 1965, a group of young local ringers rang their first peal at St. James Audlem.

A peal means that every bell sounds over 5,000 times and at Audlem this takes about 2 hours 45 minutes.

Ringing a peal is a physical and mental challenge, in that concentration has to be maintained for a long period of time and each individual ringer has to ring their bell without a break.

The original band was Leon Perry, Geoff Edwards, Frank Morton, John Scott, Terence Tricket and Lenny Meredith.

This Thursday, three of the original band — Geoff Edwards, Frank Morton and John Scott + three other Audlem ringers- will try and repeat this feat of endurance and concentration. The attempt will start at 6.00pm.
