A new Vote Poll coming soon

We are always on the look out for interesting questions to ask in the Vote Poll section of Audlem Online. A correspondent has written to say:

"A recent article in The Guardian headed "From Scotland to the

Channel Islands the cry goes up Banish the plastic bag" referred to the revolution that started six months ago in Modbury, a small town in Devon with a population of about 1,600. It became the first community in Europe to reject the use of plastic bags in its 40 plus shops (which include a Co-op).

"Research shows that Britain uses nearly 17 billion bags a year — that's

300 for every man, woman and child. Cynics said that the traders and public would soon go back to plastic bags. But, the truth is far from it. Not only has the initiative held firm: now 50 other cities, towns and villages throughout Britain are following suit.

"Hebden Bridge in West Yorkshire stopped handing out plastic bags two weeks ago after four women convinced nearly all the 104 traders in the town to reject the use of plastic bags. The switch is taking place gradually,

with some shops running down their stocks and others offering a mix of

string, corn starch and cotton bags.

"Audlem is a similar size to Modbury and has about half the number of

shops, so it should be possible to introduce a similar scheme through the

Village Traders' Association."

Following the suggestion that we hold a Vote Poll on this issue, the current poll on 'pavement safety' will end tomorrow — so vote now if you wish — and be replaced with the question: "Should Audlem join the list of communities that are helping to improve the environment by banning the use of plastics bags in its shops?"
