How many signs can you fit in the Square? - Updated

A correspondent writes: "Yet more signs have gone up in the centre of Audlem. As the village's building boom continues, every new house, development, retirement home and the rest gets its new yellow sign! There's now fifteen signs around the memorial.

"With the cycling signs, pointers to the toilets, the Baptist Church — and why haven't the Methodists got one, or indeed the chip shop? — drivers and even pedestrians will have to stop for five minutes to absorb the information. Soon we'll need a Google button on the Memorial to research the 'sign' database.

In the Independent recently, there was an article about a German town that has removed all its directional signs and given equal priority to vehicles and pedestrians. Local traffic through the small town speeded up and it appears most of the long distance lorries heard about the change and found alternative routes.

"That might be the ideal long-term answer. But in the meantime, can't a limit be placed on the number of signs we have to suffer. Also, as most of the long-distance drivers are Polish, Welsh or Irish, what'll happen when we have to have the signs in their respective languages?

"Finally, does anybody know of any other Cheshire junction with as many signs?"

7.05PM — A message from Ned Clarkson

Ned Clarkson, we suspect Jeremy's brother, and now a regular correspondent, has thoughts on this story. He says: "Road signs! What a load of rubbish! Us motorists need to know where we are going! The fact that these signs limit the view in the centre of Audlem is a small price to pay to enable a clear passage through this village in the right direction. As I pass through Audlem regularly, it's nice to know what local activities are ongoing, what sales are on etc, or don't these count as signs? Perhaps these don't count as they are local establishment driven!"
