Unusual Geese seen

Home » Latest News » White-fronted Geese seen locally

Yesterday we reported on Waxwings seen in Audlem. Today it's a somewhat bigger bird — the White Fronted Goose.

At least three have been seen just north of Overwater Marina, in the field on the left after passing Bridge 80. There are lots of Canada Geese and some Greylags there too but the White Fronted have been seen by several enthusiasts.

They are very unusual in this area as the birds that visit Britain in winter from Greenland and Russia are normally seen either in south western Scotland, the Severn estuary or the south east of England around the Thames estuary.

The White Fronted is a grey goose, smaller than a Greylag Goose or Mute Swan. Adults have a large white patch at the front of the head around the beak — which gives them their name — and bold black bars on the belly. The legs are orange and Siberian birds have pink bills, while Greenland birds have orange bills. They do not not breed in the UK.
