Cheshire East Mayor Pays Tribute to Rodney Cottrell BEM

Further to Saturday's excellent tribute, I wanted to let you know that when the Mayor of Cheshire East, Cllr Barry Burkhill, heard that Rodney had passed away and hadn't been able to attend his British Empire Medal Award Ceremony, he not only paid his own respects at Wednesday's Council Meeting but also kindly gave me the opportunity to say a few words.

I spoke of Rodney's inspirational work, how he never allowed health challenges to distract from his passion to make a difference, volunteering to help his community and communities beyond, not least his commitment to the RNLI.

I first knew Rodney and Chris a little while after their vision had secured the Scout and Guide Hall in Audlem and over the years I have realised their ability to keep everyone on their toes is truly an artform!

I will treasure even more now the infamous 'Rodney Cottrell just a little catch up telephone calls'! Whilst he ensured I was up to speed with the innovative work of Overwater Wheelyboat Services he never missed an opportunity to raise any matters he felt I might be able to help with nor to 'gently check' I hadn't forgotten any 'tasks previously set'!

Rodney was adept at creating a winning team, his enthusiasm captured hearts and minds, brought together such a wide skill set and resource of which he and Chris 'are' true leaders.

Rodney, you not only worked tirelessly but you never forgot to thank everyone no matter how big or small their contribution. I hope we never forgot nor forget to thank you.

The Methodist Church said farewell to two old friends today.Just a few months ago we became aware that our Blue Atlas Cedar had a serious disease.
