At precisely 2pm last Saturday, Lulu the cow was led by local dairy farmer Tim Rees into a carefully measured field at Foxes Bank Farm in Hunsterson, under the slightly embarrassed gaze of four judges from ADCA. This was the moment, the long-awaited conclusion of the Spot the Cowpat competition that ADCA has run over the past six months, attracting well over 3,000 entries.
Lulu steps up to the plate
Lulu herself was slightly embarrassed too: firstly to be watched doing what cows do naturally, and secondly because she was a late substitute after Daisy (whose digestive habits have been the subject of previous AudlemOnline articles) sadly failed a late fitness test, as they say in football circles.
But, despite (or would it be "because of"?) all the pressure, Lulu "performed" both quickly and admirably after less than 25 minutes chewing the cud in various parts of the field, leaving the ADCA judges to take precise measurements of where her first cowpat landed.
A subsequent AudlemOnline article will provide more details of the process that took place over the remainder of the weekend to determine the winning entries, but the four judges were unanimous in awarding the prizes as follows:
- £1,000 to Sarah Millns of Wakefield (niece of the ADCA Chairman who, by the rules of the competition, had to declare an interest and leave the decision to the other judges)
- £300 to Sarah Ellison from Accrington, who each year visits Audlem to stay with a close friend.
- £150 to Bernard Edwards, a member of ADCA's Tuesday Club that meets in the Public Hall Annexe
- £50 to Rob Davis, whose narrow boat home is based at Overwater Marina.
All the winners have been notified and will be receiving their prizes very shortly. Thank you to all who entered and who have helped ADCA to raise funds for the work that the charity does with the elderly and carers in Audlem and district.
