The British Hen Welfare Trust's Cheshire team has proudly rehomed its 5,000th hen and sent her off to become a much-loved pet!
On Saturday, 5 October the team, based in Nantwich and run by Cheshire Co-ordinator David Marek, took over 300 hens out of their colony cages and rehomed them to 61 different families. Whilst the hens would probably have preferred sunshine, they will have felt rain on their feathers for the first time and enjoyed rootling around for bugs and slugs in muddy puddles.
The lucky 5,000th hen was taken home by Rose Higgins from Stockport, who was adopting her third flock of ex-bats from the charity.
The hens rehomed on Saturday were ex-caged hens from a commercial egg farm and had been laying eggs to be sold in supermarkets or to go into processed foods. At 18 months old they are no longer deemed commercially viable and are sent to slaughter unless the BHWT steps in to rehome them.
In the buy/sell column, the BHWT are looking for a picnic bench that they can use for a seat for the volunteers that give up their time to help the hens. If anyone has a picnic bench they no longer need that they could donate to them, please get in touch.
