Council calls on developers to make tracks for Crewe

A call has gone out throughout Europe for developers interested in playing a leading role in the transformation of Crewe town centre.

Cheshire East Council has issued a formal notice to capture ideas from the commercial property sector to help formulate its plans.

The call goes out within weeks of the Council completing the £6m purchase of the Royal Arcade site, which includes the town's bus station and 26 retail units on Queensway and Victoria Street.

Council Leader, Councillor Michael Jones, said: "We have already had some very positive discussions with developers to test out whether our initial ideas for the Royal Arcade site are realistic.

"This is a vital part of the process to ensure we're getting the best deal possible for our residents and businesses, and will be done at the same time as our consultation on the future of the town centre.

"We believe in putting our residents and businesses first, so we are not going to make any decisions until we have heard what people have to say."

Although it doesn't commit the Council to any procurement and is not part of any formal bidding process, the notice to developers will help to establish the potential options at an early stage and to determine what would be needed to make any scheme viable.

Expressions of interest from potential developers are sought by July 31, 2015. The Council is planning to host an event for interested developers on July 16.

Developers who wish to register an interest should email or call +44 (0)1270 685919.

The Council will analyse expressions of interest submitted and share this with stakeholders, including existing tenants in the Royal Arcade properties, before considering its next move.

The notice calls for a development partner that understands the issues and opportunities facing the town and has a vision for harnessing them to deliver a commercially viable, mixed use development.

Applicants will be expected to demonstrate relevant experience in the UK and elsewhere; and to present options for delivery and funding.
