Carolyn Wilde reports on the October meeting of Burleydam and District Women's Institute — all in the form of a quiz.

Q. What do you do after putting the cat out at night?

A. This is a trick question, because, as all cat lovers know, cats should not be left out at night!

Q. What two items, besides the latest Harry Potter and the glass of water for the cat, who is now settling down indoors for a good night's sleep, should you have on your bedside table?

A. Your mobile phone and a torch. In the event of a fire the electricity may fail so you need the torch to light your way and the phone to call for help.

Q. If you discover a fire what should you do?

A. Get everyone out of the house and phone the fire brigade.

Q. What shouldn't you do?

A. Go back to rescue the cat (sorry). Remember: Get out, stay out and call 999.

Q. Have you and your family planned your route out of your house in the event of a fire?

A. Discuss this at home and make sure everyone knows what to do.

Q. Have you fitted smoke alarms?

A. Cheshire and Shropshire Fire Services offer free advice on smoke alarms and on general fire safety in the home.

For a home safety assessment in Cheshire ring 0800 389 0053. For a home fire safety check in Shropshire ring 01743 260298.

Q. Have you tested your smoke alarms recently?

A. Smoke alarms should be tested once a week. If you choose the same day and time it makes it easier to remember. Maybe after you have put the wheely bin out?

Q. Who came to speak at Burleydam and District WI's meeting on 7 October and provided much helpful information?

A. Keith Robinson and Matthew Field from Whitchurch Fire Station.

Carolyn Wilde adds: "Many thanks to them both for giving very important information in such a friendly style."

End of the Road! The way humans hunt, eagle eyed for parking spaces and the way animals hunt for food are not as different as you might think. We have felt the verdaning** promises of Spring, we have revelled in the glories of Summer and now the natural circle takes us into the mellowing spirit of Autumn.
