Broken arm results in change of speaker

Burleydam and District WI have contacted Audlem Online to say: "The speaker booked for Burleydam's April meeting had to cancel at short notice because she had fallen and broken her arm. Whilst sympathising with her plight there was also some wry amusement as she had been due to talk about women's health! We were fortunate that Mary Diggle, our WI Adviser, was coming to the meeting anyway as part of her planned visits to the WI's on her "patch".

"There were opportunities for new and seasoned WI members alike to brush up on their knowledge of the WI and to ask Mary questions. Mary presented her talk in the form of a quiz which lead to discussion on many issues including how to attract new members.

"The WI was originally set up in the UK to revitalise rural communities and to encourage women to become more involved in producing food during the First World War. Today it provides a powerful voice at national level with its campaigns. Equally important are the local monthly meetings across the country where women can hear talks on all sorts of issues, can learn new skills from experienced tutors and can meet their friends and neighbours over a cup of coffee and a piece of cake.

"Sarah Lunt, President, suggested to members that, instead of entering a group exhibit at the Cheshire Show, Burleydam should help stage the Cheshire Federation's Public Affairs Sub committee's exhibit which was to be based on Burleydam's successful Resolution about eating food in season from local suppliers. Members agreed and it was pointed out that those wishing to enter competitions could do so at Audlem WI's Produce Show in September.

"The April competition was a flower arrangement in a wine glass which was won by Eva Sadler, second was Ann Rutter and third Liz Gentil.
