Playing their penultimate date in the UK before moving on to Canada, the Black Umfolosi 5 brought the house down at St James Primary school last Sunday. The school hall was packed to the rafters in a sell out concert that put a smile on every face for the entire two hours of traditional Zimbabwean music, dance and song.
The group had given a day of workshops in the school earlier in the week and been full of praise for both the school and its children. The children were taught traditional gumboot dancing and some tribal song which was an utter joy to see. The songs and sounds echoed around the school for days and break outs of gumboot dancing in the playground continue such was the infectious nature of the Black Umfolosi performance.
Their encore at Sunday's concert followed an incredible crescendo of genuine appreciation from the audience who cheered and whistled and cried for more. The group expressed sincere thanks to everyone and concluded by saying that the Audlem audience had been the best on the tour by some way.
