Shaken Udder

Regular readers will recall articles in May on Audlem Online about a naturally enriched milk with a strong local involvement.

That team has now seen a huge step forward with the launch of Naturally Selenium enriched milkshakes by Shaken Udder in large supermarkets and other retailers.

It's a European first with Naturally Selenium enriched milkshakes for a healthy immune system.

The milkshakes are made with milk from farms in south Cheshire and north Shropshire and all the farmers involved will share in the profits.

Shaken Udder yesterday won the 'Best New Health Product' prize at the International Cheese Awards at the Nantwich Show. Jodie and Andrew of Shaken Udder want to be supplied by dedicated dairy farmers locally with the finest animal welfare standards.

Other than farmers, three of those involved in the enriched milk have strong Audlem links.

Andrew Henderson
Audlem resident, Ruminant Dairy Nutritionist and Managing Director of Independent Feeds Ltd.

Dr Russell Muirhead MB ChB MRCGP
GP partner in Audlem and Chairman of Shropdoc with over 270 GP members who provide care for 600,000 patients in Shropshire, Powys and Cheshire.

Russell has been a practising doctor for 30 years and has seen a huge shift in the pattern of illness. There is a growing problem of older people living with chronic or 'Long Term Conditions' into their 80s, 90s and beyond.

Prevention is the only way we can effectively reduce the impact of these chronic illnesses on both the individual and society in general.

Having researched the benefits of antioxidants, he believes that they have a major part to play, along with improved exercise, diet and reduction in harmful behaviours such as smoking and excess alcohol, in the fight to promote a healthier population.

Steve Leonard BVSc MRCVS
Practicing Veterinary Surgeon locally and well-known TV wildlife presenter of Safari Vets School on ITV1.

It works like this:

  • Natural organic selenium supports healthy animals.

  • Healthy animals make healthy milk and healthy milkshakes

  • Healthy milk enriched with selenium contributes to your healthy immune system and antioxidant defence system

  • Overall this milk and milkshake supports your health and well-being through a balanced diet.

The milkshakes come in a variety of flavours:

  • Britishberries, made with real raspberries and strawberries

  • Strawberry Stash, made with real stawberries

  • Vanillalicious, uses the finest vanilla beans

  • Chocolush, not just cocoa powder out of a tin, but actual chocolate pieces sourced from Belgium

  • Top Banana, with banana puree.

All the flavour-packed shakes use only the best-quality fresh British milk and the very finest natural ingredients. The result? A magnificent herd of delicious-tasting milkshakes!

A report in The Times last week reports that selenium is only required in tiny amounts. Studies have linked low selenium with a risk of chronic health issues and heightened risk of several cancers, including lung, bladder and prostate.

As always, there is always caution in interpreting these studies but selenium's role in health, says The Times article, appears to extend well beyond any effects it might have on cancer.

Overall, drinking just one 330ml Shaken Udder milkshake provides 15% of your Recommended Daily Allowance of Selenium and would benefit the immune sysytem of most people in the UK.
