Audlem fire sparks safety warning

Cheshire fire saftey officers have repeated safety advice after putting out a chimney fire in Audlem.

Audlem fire crews were mobilised to a report of a chimney fire in a semi-detached property on Daisy Bank Crescent in Audlem on Sunday evening.

Chimney rods and a thermal imaging camera were used to tackle the fire and crews used a roofing ladder to access the chimney from the roof.

They made a full check that the fire was extinguished and there were no hot spots.

Now safety officers are reminding residents that most chimney fires are preventable and that regular inspection of flues can help prevent fires.

Top tips for safe chimneys are to keep flues clean and well maintained, to make sure embers are properly out before going to bed and to always use a fire guard.

There is no suggestion that the Daily Bank Crescent fire was the result of any of the above but fire officers point out there are around 6,000 chimney fires in England every year.

Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service says: "To keep yourself and your family safe from fire you should take care to have your chimney swept regularly, depending upon what fuel you burn. If the worst should happen, a smoke alarm can give you the extra time you need to escape in a house fire — make sure you test yours regularly."
