Following its success in winning the Defra (Department of Environment, Food and Rural Affairs) national award for 'Building Community Life', Audlem Parish Council chairman Richard Furber was yesterday presented with a cast iron plaque by Defra representative Celia Webber. The plaque will take pride of place on the wall on the Square alongside many other awards won by the village.
Celia Webber said: "In a county considered as prosperous as Cheshire, a village as well serviced as Audlem might be in danger of being complacent about the services and facilities it has. However, Audlem clearly demonstrated that it is anything but that. There is always a lot happening but with a very outward focus. The community of Audlem is very supportive of all its residents and all those who work in, or simply visit, the village. This can be seen by the scale, variety and success of village activities and events such as the Transport Festival, Proms on the Park and the Music and Arts Festival."
Rob Benson, who attended the presentation on behalf of Calor, the sponsors of the Village of the Year competition, added: "Audlem has clearly demonstrated itself as a village full of community spirit with a positive outlook and bags of enthusiasm." He thanked everyone for their hospitality and the warm welcome the Calor judges had received during their three visits to the village over the past six months.
Richard Furber thanked Celia and Rob for their kind comments and everyone who had done so much to bring success to Audlem in the Calor and Defra awards.
