Historical Records and Sources

There are many varied historical sources relating to Audlem and the surrounding district. Some of them are easily available on other sites and some are harder to find. This page and its associated links are the results of an ongoing project by the History Society and the Online Webteam.

Domesday Book

The Domesday Book is the result of the Domesday Survey, the great tax assessment of England carried out in 1086 on the orders of William the Conqueror.

Audlem and Buerton have individual entries within the Cheshire section.

Church Records

Most of the records for St. James Church in Audlem are in the Record Office in Chester. Click here to see a summary of the Churchwardens' accounts from 1556-1871.

Tithe Maps

The Cheshire Records Office have set up a superb site to look at the 1836-51 Tithe Map and compare it with modern maps, and look up owners and occupiers. click here to see the Audlem Tithe Maps.

Trade Directories

From early in the nineteenth century, various organisations published trade directories, containing brief descriptions of towns together with lists of their more "important" residents and shops. They also sometimes include interesting details of transport, churches etc.
