ADAPT

ADAPT (Audlem & District Acting Positively for Transition) is an umbrella group supporting initiatives that aim to create a sustainable, resilient and inspiring community for our grandchildren and beyond.

  • ADAPT is open to all ages from Audlem, Buerton, Dodcot-cum-Wilkesley and Hankelow.
  • Meetings are on the first Wednesday of every month at 7.30 pm at the Baptist Chapel in Salford, Audlem.

Why ‘transition’?

We are responding to the challenges posed to the sustainability of towns and villages by the twin threats of climate change and ‘peak oil’.

  • Most people are aware of climate change and how carbon dioxide from burning fossil fuels is affecting it, even if not everyone agrees about why or how it should concern us.
  • Many people are less aware that the era of plentiful and cheap oil will end very soon, even though so much of what we have and do presently depends on oil by-products.
  • The implications of climate change and peak oil for our communities are profound. So, ‘transition’ is about making the transition from high dependency on fossil fuels and high carbon dioxide emissions to low dependency and low emissions; from unsustainable communities to sustainable ones.

You don’t have to be concerned specifically about climate change or peak oil to participate in ADAPT’s activities. Members are equally concerned about other aspects of the quality of life in our villages in the long-term. For example, members are keen on:

  • Maintaining local shops and services.
  • Reducing dependency on distant suppliers of food and energy.
  • Creating local jobs.
  • Ensuring affordable housing for young people.
  • Revitalising our self-sufficiency skills.
  • Reorienting local transport more to cycling and walking.
  • Reducing the volume of long-distance heavy goods traffic.

It is easy to feel overwhelmed by the scale of global problems like climate change and peak oil. But they will affect us locally, whether we like it or not. That’s why we’ve decided to act positively, to try to shape our own future and see what advantages there could be in a low carbon lifestyle, rather than wait until we have no choice and we’re forced to act.
