RYA Inland Waterways Helmsman Courses

Narrowboat handling courses suitable for all - from complete beginners to old hands - there is always something new to learn.

One or two-day courses following the RYA Syllabus for the Inland Waterways Helmsman Certificate. This course is ideal for anyone thinking of buying a boat, planning to hire for a holiday, or wanting to brush up their boat handling and locking skills.

Own boat training available ideal for newcomers to narrowboating.

Special Ladies' Days - with tuition provided by our patient female instructor - come on girls, give it a go - it's not as difficult as you think!

Meet the Instructor

Linda Andrews is a former British Waterways Lock-keeper and has lived aboard her own boat for a number of years. She has considerable experience of inland waterways cruising, both on canals and rivers, and is the proprietor of a small narrowboat hire fleet based at Overwater Marina.

We take a maximum of three students per course. Tea, coffee and a light lunch is provided on board.

Course Fees

Course fee per person: One day £95 + VAT
Two day £175 + VAT (includes an overnight stay on the training boat)
